Edwards and O'Neil are two of the initial candidates in the frame to succeed the former manager as head coach of Wolves.
The previous coach was dismissed on Sunday following the team's ten-game winless start to the Premier League season.
And Edwards and O'Neil - both of who have previous links to the team - are part of the options to be evaluated by the club leadership.
Edwards is presently at another club, which would pose a potential obstacle to his hiring at Molineux.
Nevertheless the ex- Luton Town head coach - who played over a century of games for Wolves during his playing career - is considered a strong candidate for the position.
The 42-year-old is said to have support from the club board as they start the search of appointing a fresh head coach.
O'Neil is also emerging as a unexpected candidate, even though he would be a shock choice given he was released by Wolves in the previous winter.
The ex- West Ham United player is out of work which means the club would not need to provide any compensation.
