Severe Weather System Claudia's Impact: Clean-up Efforts Persist as Cold Snap Looms

Emergency crews are continuing their efforts to manage extensive flooding caused by the recent severe weather.

A significant emergency was declared in the town of Monmouth, south-east Wales, where residents were rescued or evacuated from waterlogged homes after torrential rain on the weekend.

On Sunday, four severe flood warnings, warning of life-threatening conditions, remained active, alongside 41 flood warnings across England. Water heights on the Monnow surpassed previous records, topping levels seen during past storms.

Homes, commercial properties, transport networks, and energy infrastructure all experienced damage from significant flooding in parts of Wales, officials confirmed.

Data indicated that around 20 properties in England were flooded due to the storm, including some in Cumbria.

As Storm Claudia withdraws, a cold snap is expected to sweep across the United Kingdom, bringing freezing temperatures and potential wintry precipitation.

Over the weekend, the country experienced its chilliest evening since late March, with temperatures plunging to -7C in Tulloch Bridge, Scotland.

A decline of approximately five degrees will shift above-average autumn temperatures to lower figures across most of the UK, with Sunday's high at around 11 degrees in the southeastern region before further cooling at the week's beginning.

"As Storm Claudia retreats, atmospheric pressure to the north-west will drive a cold northerly flow across the country," a weather expert stated. "This results in much colder weather than lately, and, while generally drier, there is also a risk of snow and ice. Widespread frosts are anticipated, with readings dipping as low as minus seven in certain locations next week, and daytime highs remaining in the single digits."

He added, "Couple this with a brisk northerly wind, and there will be a marked chill factor. This represents a significant shift after a prolonged spell of above-average temperatures."

Public health agencies have issued a cold weather alert for parts of the Midlands and northern England from the start of the week, while environmental agencies have warned that flooding may continue throughout the weekend.

The low-temperature warning is in place from Monday morning until Friday morning, including the eastern Midlands, western Midlands, northeast, North West, and Yorkshire and The Humber.
